Evan Almighty

OK! I got to type this in after watching Evan Almighty. I always thought this is a comedy but I teared. Revelation and reminder I guess.

See, Evan, a new congressman, wants to change the world. God KNOWS he wants to change the world. He sent wood to Evan and wanted him to build an ARK. God wanted Evan to build an ark when the state was experiencing the warmest season of the year.

God chose him, amongst 6billions children whom He created, not because he was special, though he was in a position to influence. I think what made him stood out was he prayed to God to help him change the world. Yes, include God in your plan. (verse)

I started to think “if God had spoken to Evan, would He speak to Jones (Evan’s wife)? Does He need to convict her that building an ark was an OPPORTUNITY for her family to grow closer?” He did. He reminded that when we pray for patience, we are unlikely to receive patience, but OPPORTUNITIES to be trained.

I thought also that Noah must have been severely misunderstood and ridiculed by his friends, colleagues, peers, relatives. His family members could have found him crazy and threw glances of disbelief in many many occasions. It must have been very difficult for Noah. By faith, he obeyed God.

It was from a particular part of the show that I got touched by God.

That was when the animals walked in pair by pair into the ark when Evan raised his staff. How marvelous was that? ALL, as in ALL of the animals obeyed Evan, not because he spoke the animals’ languages but God gave us authority over creatures and off course, God was moving them too. He created them after all. ( I was not very convinced when I saw the polar bears but the point wasn’t that I guess. Instead, it meant that God had His way to summon animals to one place at a time when He wants to). 上帝掌握如此巨大的权威啊!

When Evan advised the camera crew, Evan’s neighbours, colleagues to board the ark, they laughed at him, calling him names, ridiculed and make fun of God. I tried to see parallel in Jesus’s crucifixion in this but cannot really put words to it yet.

The cops who were there to see that Evan’s ark was demolished were referred to as the wolves. “Ha!” I thought! I got nervous too, when precipitation didn’t occur. HOW COME no rain! 3 mins to demolishing of the ark!2 mins and counting! What was God doing? Rain came at the moment when the metal ball was to be swung at the ark. My heart skipped beat! “FINALLY!” it’s going to flood. What he predicted would come to pass!

Then it stopped. Evan remembered that there was something wrong with the dam. It was going to burst.

The reason why God wanted an ark to be built was to save His people. The reason why God wanted an ark to be built was not to drown pp, destroy them but it was an act of love. God was protecting his people as a result of men’s sin. I cannot fathom the love He had for those ppl In this film, it was a Congressman Long’s greed for money and profit. Even when men was laughing at Him, he was ready to save them. He didn’t force them to repent or to listen to Evan but gave them all a choice to follow. Very much like Jesus’s death on the cross to pay for our sins and iniquities, He did that even though when pp was humiliating Him.

Only two of any types of animals were selected to board the ark. But He made space for all, not two , but ALL people who turned back to Him. What privilege. GRACE. EVERYONE, those who laughed and mocked at Him, at Evan, the wolves (police), the sinners, those that you think do not deserve a space in there, those who knew not what they were doing, by-standers were INVITED into His ark.

It’s the gospel. It’s the Good News. I am lost for words that because of Men’s choice (Adam and Eve) that led to Sin, God has always been there for us. Sometimes near, sometimes far but He was always there. Only those who repent and see themselves sinners and believe that Jesus came to save us will have eternal life with God.

The story of Noah’s ark is really not cute cute sweet sweet one but more of God loving us, really.

Langkawi 28th Dec to 1Jan 2010

For me, going to LKW was a rest well deserved. I totally enjoyed myself there less the incidents with the polis. My rented car needed a quick fix too. haha... Each dinner there was delicious. They were like rewards to ourselves at the end of the days. Pizza on the first night, Korea bbq on the second, Grilled seafood on the third and local cuisine at a pub on the last night. All were places that were recommended by guide book from lonelyplanets while one was chanced upon.

O'er there, I marvelled at God's creation. The nature aspect. The setting of sun, the countless sands on the beach, the shapes of the hills, valleys, the lake, waterfall and the stars when i looked up the sky at night.
